I'm an advertising major who has been doing art since before I can remember. It all started with stick figures, like everyone else, then evolved into really ugly horses. Finally, I stumbled upon the Internet and discovered the wonderful world of digital art. I like yogurt, small fluffy things, and color. And graham crackers.

The Horse Manippers vs. Stockers Debate

Wed Jul 1, 2009, 12:14 PM
Okay, this is probably going to make a lot of people mad, but I kind of need to say this. I understand that people get frustrated when their rules aren't followed, and people use their stock without permission on SIM games and RPGs. I get it. But I feel like they're missing those of us who do ask for permission and follow the rules. And that frustrates me. I know that I and those I watch follow stockers rules and get permission for use on RPGs if necessary.

The stockers are getting upset over a bunch of kids who are using their pretty horse pictures on SIM games. And when I think about it, it's kind of like getting so upset over our photomanips getting used without permission. I feel like it comes down to a matter of pride and the need to have a claim and get credit for something one has made. That's totally fine, I understand that.

But... They're not making money. They're not really hurting anyone. If they're not claiming it as their own, then these kids who "steal" pictures for use on SIM games aren't really doing harm. And according to U.S. law, no one would be able to take these people to court unless one could prove that the usage actually does damage to the photographer. I highly doubt that using a picture on a SIM game is going to damage the photographer's livelihood, unless the thieves are selling the images in some way.

I know that we can't think of it as "well they're not making money," but I wonder if it's really something to get so upset about. Is it really worth it in the end to make such a fuss over this? And to ban all horse manips because some kids can't follow the rules. In my opinion, the stockers and manipers need to come together, have a chat, and figure out an agreement to try to lessen this. Because it doesn't just affect the stock artists, it affects the manipulators, too. It's not just the stocker's photos being used, in some cases, it's the manipulators art made with those photos being used. And to me, that blurs the lines of who owns the rights to what image, and how rights for derivative works are managed.

Just some stuff to think about. It's my response to a hot topic. I'm welcome to comments, but keep them civilized.
